Description

Steel Minions is Sheffield Hallam University's own commercial game development studio which provides workplace simulation for students on Hallam's games degrees. We are a licenced PlayStation minis and iOS developer with a range of games in development.

History

Foundations

The Steel Minions Game Studio was created in 2010 in order to provide students on Hallam's game development degrees with "workplace simulation" within a studio environment. Our small (but perfectly formed) studio is based in Sheffield Hallam's science park, close to Sheffield train station. Students are chosen to work in the studio based on merit, and the projects that they work on are often integrated into assessments as part of their degrees.

Latest Work

We have just released our very first commercial title, which is a game called BounceBack for PlayStation minis. We are the first university studio in the UK to put a game through the Sony QA process and have a commercially released title for PlayStation consoles.

Selected Articles

  • "We're really impressed with the standard of Sheffield Hallam's students, and it's great that we can utilise their skills and talent through these placements. The games industry is a tough one to break into, so opportunities like this are key for students and graduates, as is being able to learn in an environment like the Steel Minions games studio."
    - Paul Porter, Studio Manager of Sumo Digital, speaking about 13 students gaining placements at Sumo Digital through the Steel Minions studio in 2011, www.sumo-digital.com
